Website redesign thread

Postby lunatic_magnet » Mon Jun 19, 2017 8:34 am

At the cookout, members discussed the need for a website upgrade. I started the process with a relatively basic, but somewhat updated design that i've used on other websites i've built in the past.

the "beta site" can be found here.
http://www.lunaticmagnet.com/necf

Pictures are just two that I stole from John's photo post from the picnic. I anticipate they will probably change, but they make for hood placeholders for the time being. Expect a nice looking header image (along the lines of that group shot) and maybe a smoother looking logo.

Links that go to the messageboard here are active. The others are not.

Any and all input is welcome and encouraged, be it design, wording, or what pages should be added/removed.

I can dig it. I assume the forum portion of it would look similar?

I think it works well

- events: Should be a sidebar for this listing the event, date, small blurb, and link to the event thread. This way potential attendees don't have to go hunting through the forum or various discussions for event data.

- I like the bit "NECF is not about cars, but about people who happen to enjoy them. All are welcome." but maybe say "NECF isn't JUST about cars. It's also about the people who enjoy them. All are welcome."

Have we made any headway on a forum direction or if it's even possible to export data to a new platform?

I can also help with some graphics work & designs if needed.

nothing right now. i think we have to come up with a functioning site that we're happy with before we direct the domain names to it.

i don't want to make the site itself too complicated so that it requires website updating to keep it in date. that's the problem with our current site. if i can keep a simple framework, and direct things to the right places where they can be added to as needed by multiple people (like the message board for instance), that would be the best bet i think. i am gonna try and do something with wordpress (blogging website) so that way the main structure of the site doesn't have to change but the info in it is easily editable by multiple people as needed with a simple password and easily formatted. i just have to figure it out. but this would easily allow the front main page to be updated by any of the core members who have access to it.

easy peasy, can do.

i believe you can download all the PhBB (forum) data and re-upload it to transfer everything. but that is also a Site Admin thing, and i don't know if Al has the permissions to do that, or if we want to continue using PhBB as forum software. upside: it's free. down side: doesn't have as many features as some paid forum software.

I can also help with some graphics work & designs if needed.

ok then, you're in charge of logos, make it happen :) post some stuff up for us :)

i think we need a simple one that would fit where the current NECF logo is at the top left, and a decent looking header of some sorts as well... nothing against the current logo, but i think it's probably time for an update.

Re: Website redesign thread

Postby lunatic_magnet » Tue Jun 27, 2017 10:41 pm

Played more with the site stuff tonight.
Here is the general idea.
Pages that don't need any kind of regular updating are just hardwired. Others are linked to wordpress (blog site) that allow for easy editing with a password.

Wordpress is no more difficult than updating/editing a post here on the message board. Right now that is the Events and Member Rides sections. As I have it set up now, those two pages are connected and edited with one username/password combo. Those who have the password have to trust the others with it because the content can be wiped by anyone with it. I'd suggest 3, 4 people tops, and it should be people who are going to actively update it.

Now is the time to suggest more/extra pages if needed. Tech Archives/articles? Photo archives? Dessert recipes? I can add anything and make it a page, and it's easiest to do it now.

HOME - main page, waiting on GPSkinzhut for some updated graphics. Still open for suggestions for pictures + shiny attractive stuff for our main page. Basic is good, boring is not.
ABOUT NECF - nothing here yet. anyone wanna write up some history or something otherwise spiffy about us?
FORUM - directly links here
EVENTS - new wordpress page! currently blank, but has link to events forum
MEMBER RIDES - new wordpress page! editable! has a few member rides in it right now just for demo's sake
CLASSIFIEDS - direct link to classifieds forum
CONTACT US - nothing here yet, probably just add some contacts/emails?

That's all for the website stuff.

I'll have to start looking into my ability to setup/host the forum on my available webspace.

I'm more thinking it would pull from the events forum or blog directly, so only need to post updates in one place. Following the link takes the user to the event details. I'm just spitballing, I don't know for certain that the function exists. I'm all for simplicity and not duplicating effort.

i believe you can download all the PhBB (forum) data and re-upload it to transfer everything. but that is also a Site Admin thing, and i don't know if Al has the permissions to do that, or if we want to continue using PhBB as forum software. upside: it's free. down side: doesn't have as many features as some paid forum software.

It's been a long time since I've dealt with PHBB but usually (I think) you'd have to run through various updates first to bring the schema, DB, and other various things to current. Do we know what rev we're on here?

ok then, you're in charge of logos, make it happen :) post some stuff up for us :)

Absolutely. I'll have some stuff up in a few days.

we're several versions behind on phpBB. Currently at 3.0.11 and I think the current is 3.2.

I've got a 3.0.11 board installed on my host and I'm working on restoring the database from a backup I took of the current board. If I can get it running I'll work on upgrade process.

We'll still need FTP access to the current host to pull images and the like.

Postby John in RI » Fri Jun 30, 2017 11:28 pm

i believe you can download all the PhBB (forum) data and re-upload it to transfer everything. but that is also a Site Admin thing, and i don't know if Al has the permissions to do that,

BINGO.

Right now Jay has Admin access to all the original NECF files. Does anyone else have the password to what-ever web-host he was using.

Does NECF have a new web-host yet ?? This is at the VERY TOP of the 'to-do' list. The sooner NECF has a new web-host the better,..... Right now all new pages/files are being uploaded to Petes' web-host, but all the new NECF files should be getting uploaded to a new NECF web-host.

In regards to the forums, Pete's right & this has always been 'THE' problem. We need Jay to download all the PHPbb files to a local source - or to give someone the original NECF web hosts account password so they can download all the files - then those PHPbb files need to be uploaded to the new NECF web-host. Then the forum will continue exist "as is" only from a new location on the web. We should deal with changing things around/updating ( Website & Forums ) after we find a new web-host.

I'd recommend staying with PHPbb. It's free, stable and apparently easier to use than most others. I've attempted to load PHPbb onto my own web-host, but it failed. My Berlinetta.info web-host ( Yahoo ) will not allow the HTACCESS file to be uploaded. Pretty sure I've got to deal with WordPress and I just don't want to. That's why I never has a BB on my website ! )

Yahoo / Luminate web hosting is about $13 a month.... I gott'a believe that GoDaddy and others are priced in the same price range for web hosting but the monthly fee will really depend on the "options" that are selected when establishing the new web-host.

Here are the 2 NECF images I've got:

Original NECF Banner:

Original NECF T-Shirt Image:

Did the same when I made John a global moderator.

When you look at my profile here & CLICK "Groups",... You will see that it does not show me as part of the 'Global Moderators or the Administrator Groups.

Look at The Brother AL profile,.. select "Global Moderators" and CLICK "GO"; next screen shows global moderators as

AC1LE
86SC
Manifoldsrme

And
Brother AL appears as an Administrator.

JAY is shown to be the Group Leader.

AL: You had said that you bought both / all of the NECF web domain names that Jay was using,...... But the "NECF HOME" link on all the forum pages still doesn't work. ( They link to " http://www.nec-f.org/ ". ) Was http://www.nec-f.org one of the domains that you bought ?? I have to assume that you also bought " http://www.necamaro-firebird.org " ...... any others ?? I could be wrong, but It seems like the only page that used nec-f.org was the home page link.

Heads-Up for all: search the web using just about any web browser for "New England Camaro" - even add the "Firebird" - & the search results all lead back to the http://www.necamaro-firebird.org web address; this should remain our "main" website address / homepage. If we re-direct or use another web address as our new home page than we might loose the good search ranking we currently have. I don't know that - just something to consider !

The board isn't easy to upgrade.

https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2400051

" this is the best/basically the only good way to upgrade ( not update ) from 3.0 to 3.2:

Upgrading from phpbb 3.0.x to phpbb 3.2.x

Your server must be running at least PHP 5.4<------------------------------ the downtime for the board was due to switching hosting service to be able to update the PHP language to 5.4... it's currently running 5.3

MODs for 3.0.x are incompatible with 3.2.x and their functionality will be removed in the update process.
Styles for 3.0.x cannot be installed or used on 3.2.x.

Backup up your board's files and database
Download the Support Toolkit. Install it and run the database cleaner to remove all old MODs from the database.
Deactivate all styles except for prosilver
Ensure that the activated spambot countermeasure is one of the standard phpBB plugins (Simple image, GD image, GD 3D image, Q&A, reCaptacha).
Set British English as the only language pack
Delete all of your phpBB 3.0.x files EXCEPT for the following:
The config.php file
The /images/ directory
The /files/ directory
Download the 3.2.x Full Package to your computer and unzip it.
Delete the blank config.php file from it. (Note: you don't want to overwrite your original config.php file)
Upload all the remaining files/folders to your server where your old board was.
Browse to yourdomain.com/yourphpbb/install/ then click the update tab. Click update. This could take a long time on a large board, maybe hours. Dont give up.Keep clicking the continue button until you get a success message.
Delete the folder named /install/"

Server side updates have been done and the issues on the hosting side resolved so now upgrades can happen.

The board is the board, Doesn't really need an update,.... we simply want to preserve the almost decade of experience that's already written into the existing forums. This is not complicated. Download all the forum files from the existing web-host, upload them to the new web-host - DONE. The existing forums will remain intact as is,... simply residing in a new location on the web. Updating, enhancing, upgrading the forum is of secondary concern and can be dealt with once it is re-established on the new web host.

What needs to be updated is the WEBSITE.

For almost 10 years the website got ZERO updating. PAST and CURRENT events pages described events that took place 8-10 years ago. Almost none of the events we held were ever displayed and none of the events we had planned were ever promoted. I see that those pages have now simply been deleted,... so our "website" is now a single webpage and a web forum ( and the web-link on ALL the forum pages to return us to the Website leads to a non-existent Website address ( NEC-F.org )

K-I-S-S

Who owns necamaro-firebird.org ?? Al? Jay ?? Or Go Daddy ??

it's probably because the board was transferred to the new server and not actually installed on the new server. So there's likely files referencing the original server. That's one reason why it's not as simple as downloading the current board and uploading the files to new hosting. I'm not seeing email setting in the admin control as far as board emails.

Passwords shouldn't have been effected at all. Mines the same as it's always been, and if one computer was set for auto login that should mean the password is still the same if it logs in.

because there's facebook groups and a facebook pages. they act differently.

there's only a NECF group which is more/less a message board just like this one.

a NECF page would be something that pushes notifications/updates/links out to people's news feeds if you like the page.
